I know, let's stop in Torquay for a while

This time of year, jobs teaching English as a Second Language - at least in England - get a bit scarcer. So when we were offered two weeks of work in Torquay, Devon, we decided to take the job ... even though the students would be teenagers, and we really prefer not to teach this age group.

We even hurried back from Australia a couple of days earlier than we originally planned, just so we could do the job.

I lived in Devon during my teenage years, in the sixties (!) before my family emigrated to Australia. I think we visited Torquay maybe once, I didn't remember anything about it - especially how hilly it is!

The school we were working at arranged for us to have a room in this big pink house at the top of the hill right near the centre of town.

The views from our room were magnificent - Torquay city and streets, and the bay as well.

And the room was huge, with a big bay window to enjoy the views from.

There are ten or more people living in the house, and a couple of kitchens to share, and several bathrooms, showers, toilets. After two weeks we were pretty tired of having to remember to pick up your toilet roll to take with you every time you went to the toilet, and sharing a kitchen that was ill-equipped - all the fun of community living.

The town itself is very picturesque, with a lovely little harbour, and a variety of shops and interesting buildings.

It's very touristy, though this time of year things are pretty quiet.

The Job

Teaching the teenage boys for two weeks was hard work - they were a group from a school in Switzerland, 60 boys and 7 girls! They were exuberant, with one-track minds, and many of them were not at all motivated to learn English, not at all excited about being in England.

However, at the end of our two weeks we decided that we like Torquay. We started attending a church here - Upton Vale Baptist Church - and made some good friends already.

So, why not? Let's stay in Torquay for a bit!
